Gulet CARPE DIEM Crew Profile
Captain, Hakan Diker
Captain Hakan is from Dalaman, on Turkey’s southwest coast and has spent much of his life on or near the sea. He has worked as Deckhand/Steward on CARPE DIEM previously, following which, he took similar positions on well-known charter yachts, M/S SAMERKAND, M/S ELIFSU II and M/S TANEM H. Following a three-year stint on M/S QUEEN OF DATCA as First Mate, he is back with CARPE DIEM, in his first captaincy position.
Hakan’s experience in the local charter industry, his high level professionalism and his fluency in English make him the ideal captain. He is an excellent host with an in-depth knowledge of the south-west coast of Turkey and the adjacent Greek islands.
Like many from this part of the world, Hakan was born with an innate sense of hospitality and service. He is married and a father.
Chef, Serdar Dede
Our chef, Serdar is 27 years of age and was born in Izmir. Serdar is returning to CARPE DIEM I after four years as chef aboard the gulet, QUEEN OF DATCA, where he gained experience cooking seafood dishes from every corner of the Mediterranean, thus adding to his already impressive repertoire of light and summery fish dishes.
Starting out in the kitchen of a local restaurant at the age of 15, Serdar had no inkling at the time that he would end up working on yachts, rustling up a half dozen delicious appetizers to serve with cocktails at sunset and perfecting his signature dish: Whole Roasted Salt-encrusted Grouper. By the age of 20, he was in charge of the galley aboard CARPE DIEM and he held this position for 3 years until the owner’s new yacht, QUEEN OF DATCA was launched.
Serdar is a versatile cook and will prepare meals to suit any dietary preference. He creates hearty summer soups and salads from fresh local ingredients, as well as tasty vegetarian meals, authentic pasta dishes, fresh fish and seafood dishes and delectable desserts. Serdar bakes bread in the galley and is happy to whip up a batch of crunchy cookies for afternoon tea.
Serdar speaks beginner’s English. He lists as his hobbies experimenting with cooking styles from around the world, swimming, playing tennis and reading.
First Mate, Kenan Kucukyilmaz
Kenan was born in the Black Sea port of Trabzon in 1982. He completed high school and began his career on the sea. Having earned his Seaman’s Book, he took a job on a large cargo ship that journeyed along the Black Sea and throughout the Mediterranean. Kenan’s experience on charter yachts began in 2008 as deckhand aboard M/S DRAGON FLY. In 2009, he took a deckhand’s position aboard M/S SHANTI and between 2010 and 2012, he was Deckhand/Steward aboard M/S BLUE HEAVEN.
As First Mate onboard CARPE DIEM, it is Kenan’s job to assist the captain with the sailing of the yacht and oversee guest activities, such as tender rides ashore and watersports.
Kenan speaks fluent English, is married to a woman of German descent and is a father. His hobbies include diving and swimming.
Hostess, Necmiye (Mia) Kandemir
Mia, 27, is a native of the Aegean coast, having grown up in Manisa and attended university in Mugla. When she graduated from the School of Tourism and Hospitality in 2009, she had already spent two summers working in the bar of local resorts, and was able to put her knowledge of cocktail mixing to good use as hostess aboard M/Y ZEYNEP T, M/Y QUEEN A, S/Y GOLDEN TOUCH and the Rixos Hotel Chain’s mega yacht, BLUE SCORPION. The last of these positions allowed her an excellent opportunity to improve her service knowledge and skills, as this yacht was often the venue for gatherings of dignitaries and heads of state, with silver table service being the order of the day.
Mia speaks an intermediate level of English, is very service oriented and her cheerful, outgoing personality makes her an indispensible member of the crew.
Mia loves to read, watch films and take long walks ashore.
Deckhand, Ahmet Vicdan
Ahmet was born in Kahramanmaras, in Central Anatolia and his family moved to the southwest coast when he was 3 years of age. Ahmet grew up in Marmaris and completed his high school education in 2011, following which he gained his Seaman’s Book, with the view to working on the sea. He has held the position of deckhand aboard CARPE DIEM since 2011, is learning English and lists as his hobbies playing football and listening to music.
