The Bahamas is an island country consisting of more than 700 islands in the Atlantic Ocean, north of Cuba. Its capital is Nassau on the island of New Providence. The name Bahamas is derived from the Spanish “baja mar” (shallow sea) reflecting the shallow waters of the area. The Bahamas became a British Crown colony in 1718, when the British clamped down on piracy, including the infamous Blackbeard. After the American War of Independence, thousands of American Loyalists with their enslaved Africans, moved to the Bahamas, where the Americans set up plantations. Today, the descendants of slaves form the majority of the population. The Bahamas became part of the Commonwealth in 1973. In terms of GDP per capita, it is one of the richest countries in the Americas, following the USA and Canada.

Weather
The temperature averages between 24°C and 29°C in both winter and summer, although it can get chilly in the early morning and at night. The Bahamian winter (Dec – Feb) is high season because North Americans come here to escape winter. Summer brings extreme heat and humidity. The hurricane season lasts from beginning June to end November. Hurricanes are actually fairly infrequent and forecasts give adequate advance warning.
